Dates: Thursday September 7, 8:30 a.m. to Friday September 8, 5:30 p.m. (Registration and coffee available beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.)
Purpose: : ONT3 will provide a forum for the discussion of research being conducted on optical network research testbeds sponsored by NICT, LSN, and partner organizations, together with the US, Japanese, and other international advanced networking communities, including representatives from government agencies and research and education optical testbed initiatives. Such initiatives will include those represented by the JET and partner advanced networks and regional optical networks (RONs). This forum will build upon the efforts of the ONT2 to develop clear objectives, roadmaps and processes for transitioning the advanced networking community and its networking infrastructure to leading edge, next generation optical networks. The themes of this forum include a range of advanced optical networking topics, especially those that relate to international communication services. This workshop will present concepts emerging from optical testbeds from throughout the world as well as those established on international fabrics. This workshop has been scheduled in advance of the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF) conference, which will be held the following week at the same conference center in Tokyo. The GLIF undertakes multiple initiatives designing capabilities for advanced optical networking world-wide (www.glif.is). Participants are encouraged also to attend that conference. The ONT2 event challenged participants to provide 5 year directional roadmaps for their initiatives. This workshop will present more detailed roadmaps, and it will incorporate key concepts and objectives that are related to international optical testbeds.
Participants: This invitation-only workshop is organized as the third in a series, following the September 2005 Optical Network Testbeds Workshop (ONT2). ONT2 began a process directed at developing specific frameworks for initiatives that would assist in the transition toward next generation optical networks and services. ONT3 will continue pursuing that goal, with a primary focus on international optical networking. ONT3 will build on the ONT2 conceptual frameworks and initial activities toward a more comprehensive framework for community action, to achieve the workshop goals. Accordingly, ONT3 will involve participation from the world-wide advanced optical networking testbed community, including senior representatives from Japan as well as other Asian nations, Canada, Europe, and the US. ONT3 will involve senior representatives of national and international optical network research testbeds, of communities designing and implementing optical networks, of network technology and service providers, and senior engineering and research and development project managers from the advanced networking communities.
