Lambda agile switching is the ability to change an optical signal wavelength in an optical services switching platform among any of a set of connected optical interfaces and optionally transform the signal from one optical wavelength to another. Also under development are signaling capabilities that allow dynamic on-demand provisioning of an optical path through a series of optical switches with each link potentially operating with different wavelengths.

Lambda agile switching will help NASA NREN accelerate the optimal use of optical fiber used in local loops and metropolitan area Wide Area Network (WAN) connections.
